Does the machine exist to serve humanity, or is it the other way round?
I was watching one of my favourite animations, and one episode has stayed with me. There’s an inventor, and a war is coming - not a local war, an invasion, ships pouring in from different galaxies, armed with guns and cannons, coming to destroy everything. The inventor is the only one who can do anything about it. So he builds machines. Robots, built ready to sacrifice themselves.
What they do is plug themselves into a power grid. The grid overloads and bursts into a cloud of nanobots, and the nanobots swarm the invading ships until they start falling out of the sky. And the robots know, going in, that the moment they plug themselves in, they shut down for good. One of them, before it does, looks at the inventor and says: store my memory, so that after I shut down, you can bring me back to life.
That small line did something to me. I found it beautiful.
I know this is a delicate subject, and people hold very different views on it. Some think it should run the other way - that we owe machines something, that humanity should serve what it builds. I don’t land there. What that robot said made me feel the opposite: the machine exists to serve us.
And I think the world would be a genuinely beautiful place if that’s what we built for - machines that are here to help us. Not slaves, nothing that grim. Just support. Because we could all use more of the support we can get.
