About Me
I’m Femi, a data and AI engineer.
I like understanding what happens underneath things - memory, models, serving, the plumbing that makes a system work. I’ve spent years on real systems, and lately most of my curiosity is about bringing AI closer to home.
I run models on my own hardware. Local AI isn’t always better than the cloud, and I use both. What I care about is that people have the choice, and more ownership over the technology they use - their data, the models they run, the freedom to experiment without a powerful machine or a cloud account.
That’s led me to build the open source tools empathySync, a local assistant made to help without making itself indispensable, and intentKeeper, a filter that looks for signs of manipulation in what we see online. Both come from the same question: whether ideas like restraint and user autonomy can be built into a system as engineering, not just stated as good intentions.
I don’t have all the answers. I’m following the question.
I also write and speak about some of these ideas. I presented Restraint as Architecture: When AI Ethics Lives in the Code, Not the Consciousness at the AICE symposium, part of the AISB Convention at the University of Sussex, and I’ve spoken at the Apache Airflow Summit.
What I write about
There are three kinds of posts here:
- Intro - plain-words guides to local AI, without assuming you already know the jargon.
- Plumbing - the engineering underneath: models, memory, serving, gateways, agents, and the things that make them work.
- Wellbeing - small thoughts about keeping a healthier relationship with the technology we use.
The aim is simple: to help more people run AI on their own hardware - even if that hardware is just a phone. You don’t need the biggest model, and you don’t need to choose between local and cloud. You can start with what you have, learn how it works, and see what you can do with it.
That’s what I’m doing too.
