A healthier relationship with the algorithms around us

Wellbeing Human + AI

We might not notice it, but algorithms surround us. The recommendations on YouTube, on our social apps, on the news feeds - algorithms, all of them. And most of them are trained for one thing: to keep us on the app as long as possible. User retention, maximum engagement. That’s what they’re built for.

So here’s the situation. Nearly every app in your day is quietly trying to take as much of your time and attention as it can. The question is how to live with that without getting sucked in.

If you take one thing from this: you won’t out-muscle the algorithm. It’s very good at its job, and it will only get better at it. What you can do is add a little friction, and shape what it feeds you.

Add friction

The first thing I do is set time limits on these apps. Not to quit them, just to put a small speed bump between me and the endless scroll. The algorithm is good enough that a bit of friction is the honest minimum. It won’t save you on its own, but it helps.

Feed it on purpose

The second thing: I engage, deliberately, with the content that’s actually good for me. If I’m trying to learn a new language, I like and comment on the language posts, because then the algorithm brings me more of them - and the same machine that was eating my time starts helping me learn instead. You have to watch that you don’t get overwhelmed. But pointed the right way, the recommendation engine can work for you rather than on you.

Choose calm over the trigger

The last thing is about what you let in. The strongest hooks are the ugly ones - outrage, fear, greed, the stuff that leaves you angry or restless. I try to lean toward content that leaves me calm and settled, rather than enraged or hungry for the next thing.

I can’t switch these algorithms off, and I won’t pretend a few habits beat them. But this is how I keep the relationship a healthy one: a little friction, feeding it on purpose, and choosing the calm over the trigger.
